Most of the time, I stay away from controversial topics here on the old blog. The whole Magic Mike/50 Shades of Grey? I never weighed in. ObamaCare? I have *very* strong feelings on the topic, but never uttered a peep here. I'm not a fan of stirring up trouble for no good reason. But sometimes there are things that come up that are so close to my heart, I can't not say anything. Today I have two of those topics for you.
The first has to do with the terrible, horrific shooting in Colorado. I can't stop watching coverage, because my heart is just aching for these people and all they have had to endure. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain they are feeling.
So after I heard the news Friday morning and logged into Twitter...I assumed I would see people sending prayers and thoughts out to Colorado. And while I did see a few, what I saw more of was women blasting the choice of one mother who brought her three month old to the movies that night. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Now I have my own personal feelings on where and when I would bring a baby out, but none of that matters when 70 families are dealing with death and injury. What's that quote about those who are sinless casting the first stone? Sure we have all done things as parents that other may disagree with, but Friday was not the time for that. It was time to come together and support all of those impacted by a terrible tragedy. Shame on you.
The other issue I want to talk about is the Penn State scandal. The NCAA came down with some very harsh punishments for the school today. All of which are warranted. A man molested an probably unknown amount of children, and the school administration {which should be helping children} covered it up, and documented their cover-up. I fully support their punishments.
But apparently I seem to be in the minority. People are outraged over the harshness...saying that it is punishing alumni and current students. No alumni are being affected....their diplomas are not being taken away....their years of education are not being erased from their minds. Bad break for graduating from a school now riddled with scandal...could happen to any of us, their lives will go on as usual.
As far as current students go? So they can't play in a bowl game for the next few years. Big deal. If they're great players they'll still be eligible for the NFL draft even if they don't play in a bowl. They were also told they could immediately leave the program and play at another school. Sure that might be hard to do, but not life changing.
You know what's really terrible? You know who we should be feeling bad for right now? THE CHILDREN WHO WERE ABUSED. I'm sure they would much rather have an alma mater that they're not too proud to talk about than have to endure a lifelong struggle of overcoming their abuse. Abuse that could have been stopped if the administration at Penn State hadn't covered it up.
Today I am sad to live in a country with such horror and such messed up priorities. I do and will continue to teach my children about what is right and wrong, and who the real victims are in the world.

Amen, sister. AMEN.
Well said! Glad you posted this!
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!! Soooooo true!!!!
The school deserves punishment, but why is that all people are talking about? I live here, it's insane! Do we hear about the victims? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so heartbroken over the shooting. My heart aches for them. :(
On a semi-side note. I was watching GAA on Friday and they were interviewing a "man" in the theater... and he said the guy near him was elderly and shot "like late 30's or 40's" Uhhhhh... that's not elderly!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanted to kick the guy. But that wasn't what the interview was about. But seriously, in 10 years i'm not classified as elderly!
I agree with you. I'm completely in support to the punishments that the university has to endure. I'm not sure if there is a punishment they could give that university that I would feel is unjustified.
It's sad that our world focuses on the unimportant things during times of tragedy. While it crossed my mind about confusion with the 3 month old in the theatre, that by no means puts that mother at fault for the child's injuries. It does not make her a bad mother, nor should it even be a topic of conversation. That poor mother should not be judged in the least for her decision that evening. She was not knowingly putting her child in danger, unlike the coaches at Penn State. Hats of to you.
TOTALLY AGREED!!!! I will admit that I was a little stunned that people brought children to a loud, long, late, not-for-kids movie .. but .. come on. A six year old is dead and a 3 month old is injured. I'm pretty sure the parents feel badly enough.
GREAT post! I completely agree. This country has it's priorities mixed up. So sad.
All we can do is try to teach our children better.
Breaks my heart.
Totally agree lady! I cannot believe the outcry against those poor parents for having their baby at the theater. Maybe the kids were heavy sleepers and they couldn't find a sitter! They didn't bring them expecting to be shot at. The judgement is truly terrible.
As for Penn State, the weird inclusiveness of some colleges in terms of cover ups and support for those who committed crimes is absolutely disgusting. The day you choose football over a harmless child being abused is the day you stop being a decent human being.
Excellent post! It does need to be said. Let's remember the victims, with prayers and support. There should be justice for them. Those who commit crimes or cover them up don't deserve anything.
AGREE!! The Penn State thing just makes me sick. Absolutely sick. Knowing that so many people knew and nobody did anything is disgusting. I can't imagine how those children have to feel knowing that so many people could have stopped what was happening but instead they just covered it up. I get that this is a harsh punishment for the school but the reality is that what they covered up was WAY harsher for the real VICTIMS here! It just makes me sick.
great post!
I for one am not outraged about the punishment and wouldnt even have mentioned it on my twitter had I not seen your tweet. I just didnt understand the full impact or not on punishing the current students part.
I didnt even know there was all this negative outcrying going on about either story till I saw your tweet/blog, goes to show how much in the loop I am,a big tv news watcher I am not.(its that policewife part of me that doesnt like the news so much)
and yes the VICTIMS are what should be front and center so lets start a'tweeting and remind everyone.
I completely agree with you. The Colorado thing made me sick. How dare you judge parents on what is probably the worst day of their lives?! I guarantee the Mom of the six year old had a child that was super excited about seeing Batman and since it's summer, she decided it would be a nice surprise. The Mom of the baby? Probably hasn't been out in months and figured the kid would sleep the whole time. Who cares? That all made me sick.
And word on the Penn State mess. I agree wholeheartedly with the punishment.
Very well said!!!!
amen...x2!
